Puppy Care

New puppies are a bundle of joy. At Capitol Illini, our experienced veterinarians can answer all your questions regarding vaccinations, nutrition, and growth. Food is an especially important topic as what you feed your new puppy can significantly impact their overall health. We’ll discuss this during the first wellness visit, which includes:

  • Full physical exam from nose to tail
  • Heartworm preventive
  • Intestinal parasite screening and deworming
  • Flea/tick control
  • Vaccinations and booster shots
  • Health assessment

We recommend the following vaccination schedule for puppies:

  • Distemper/Parvo/Hepatitis vaccine
  • Rabies vaccine to be administered at twelve weeks of age or older.
  • Additional vaccines such as kennel cough (Bordetella) and Lepto (Leptosporosis). Lyme and Canine Influenza vaccines are also recommended based on your puppy's lifestyle and risk profile.

Capitol Illini also offers microchipping services for all new puppies.

We advise spaying or neutering your puppy at 6-12 months of age depending on breed and size.

Kitten Care

New kittens are adorable. Capitol Illini is a Cat Friendly Practice® and our doctors and staff are specially trained in feline medical care practices. Please bring your new kitten to us for a wellness visit as soon as possible. We offer kitten vaccinations starting at two months of age to protect against flu viruses, respiratory diseases, and rabies.

The initial wellness exam includes:

  • Full physical exam from nose to tail
  • Heartworm preventive
  • Intestinal parasite screening and deworming
  • Flea/tick control
  • Vaccinations and booster shots
  • Health assessment

We strongly recommend testing for Leukemia Virus FIV and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus during the first visit.

Our kitten vaccination schedule is as follows:

  • FVRCP (prevents Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus infection, and Panleukopenia) administered every 3 to 4 weeks until sixteen weeks of age. Cats over twelve weeks of age with an unknown vaccination status will be given 2 vaccinations 3 to 4 weeks apart.
  • Rabies vaccine to be administered at twelve weeks of age or older.
  • Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) vaccine is highly recommended for the first year. Thereafter, the FeLV vaccine for your adult cat will depend upon his/her lifestyle and risk factors.

Spaying or neutering your kitten is recommended at 6 months of age.

Capitol Illini also provides microchipping services for all new kittens.
